When I divorced in Oregon, it was explained that a legal separation is effectively the same as a divorce, but is used by those religions that don't allow the parties to divorce (i.e. Catholics). So it is exactly the same process as a divorce where both parties list who is responsible for each debt and how financial matters will be handled.
If you intent is to legally not be responsible for the debts of another, filing a notice in the newspaper will help, but if the debt is a joint debt (for example you both are signers on a credit card) then you are both responsible for the debt until it is paid. Your separation paperwork or divorce may require the other party to pay the debt, but if they don't, either of you can be sued or garnished to recover the debt. And if one files for bankruptsy, they other may still be responsible for the debts.
I'm not a lawyer, only restating information that was shared with me. How you use this information is up to you.

If you file for legal separation or divorce, there is a section for you to list his debts and your debts. From the time the judge signs them, or the date you filed them (can't remember which), each of you is not responsible for the others debts. I am from Oregon myself and have gone thru a divorce twice, and had gotten the legal separation papers thinking that was the way to go so I saw what it had. But, a tip is that a legal separation costs just as much as a divorce here. So, if you even possibly think that you are going to be divorcing, then a divorce would be the better way to go. Otherwise, you are paying for this twice. I personally wouldn't do that, unless I could afford it. But, this is a decision that only you and your spouse can make.
