It's according to the person. I try to give a sympathetic ear, if the person is comfortable with me then I will give a hug. sometimes just touching someone on the arm , shoulder or hand really makes a person feel better.

definitely a mixture of all three...you have to let the person know that your being attentive by listening...you smile when your trying to cheer them up...and you hug to let them know your there and you're someone they can lean on.....
oh yeah !! and don't forget to say "uh huh" or "yeah" at the right time ...lol this definitely lets them know that your paying attention

For women I let cry on my shoulder and hold them in my arms for guys I listen and give them encouraging word and pat them on the back
