i won't do it. when they tell me to pull up, even when i ordered something simple, or they aren't busy, i just smile and tell them i don't mind waiting, roll up the window, and make everybody wait. i drives them crazy. try it.

I think that perhaps some of the girls could be correct about the timer thing. They didn't have those when I worked drive thru wayyyyyyyy back in the day, but we used to have people pull forward because they had ordered something "special." Like say you didn't want onions on your burger or you wanted your fries without salt or something like that. If that's the case, usually the cook has to make your stuff fresh, and your food can't just be bagged from the normal items that are already premade and sitting under the hot lamps. They usually have a time of how long they can keep stuff before it has to be tossed (to keep things semi-fresh). They have you pull aside so you don't hold up the drive thru for others that don't order special items or that just order a drink or something like that. That way the line moves steadily along, and you aren't holding things up. If you didn't order a "special" item, and they had to make something fresh because their stock was low or something, then that same rule applies. They don't want to potentially hold up the line from someone that might just want something simple like a drink or something. Also, it looks bad to people driving by if there is a long line in a drive thru and it could turn away potential customers. Think about it. If you see a bunch of cars in a drive thru, you likely won't go. You'll go somewhere else. So, it's the idea to keep cars moving along, and no one sitting in the drive thru for a long period of time. (I realize you said they do this even when they're not busy.. but the management ideal is to ALWAYS keep cars moving along and not sitting in the drive thru for more than a specific time frame.)
One restaurant totally against this entire way of thinking is In-n-Out. They make all their food fresh, and really, you can count on sitting in their drive thru for at least a good ten minutes.. AT least! But you know that right off and don't mind because the food is good! lol... Don't get me wrong, I'm sure they try to get their customers through the line as fast as possible, but since they make all their food fresh, that is their number one deal.. fresh food and good customer service.
I think that'd be pretty funny if you did what that other guy said and just said you didn't mind waiting and rolled up your window and waited there. heehee.. I guess that would show them eh?

It is the whole deal with being on a timer. It looks bad on the manager if it takes too long to fill an order.
Once my husband and I were at McDonald's and the lady asked us to pull up. We did not pull up because there was no one behind us. She got extremely hateful with us. I have a really bad temper, but instead of cussing her out, I just called the 800 number and complained about her.
I don't have much patience for rude people.

They do this because when you drive up to the order menu, you start a timer. The employees have to keep that timer below a certain number or they can get into trouble. By asking you to pull past the pick up window, you stop the timer. It's cheating but it keeps them from getting into trouble.

They make you pull up because they are on a timer and are trying to get good average times for the shift. This can earn them small rewards sometimes. If they let you sit at the window the timer continues to run and raises their average. Then when the managers get reprimanded they take it out on the people running the drive-thru.

Maybe because you're being an ****** and they want to be rude. Or maybe the drive thru-girl thinks you're hot, and she wants her friend in the kitchen to see you. I worked at a drive thru in high school.
