It depends on what finish you are putting on. If you are painting, you can sand across the grain so long as you finish with a fine grit. If you are staining the wood, you MUST sand with the grain, as the stain will catch in the sanding scratches and look like crap. And it takes a LOT of effort to get cross sand grain marks out after they are put in.

if you have a lot to get off you can sand cross the grain but leave enough to finish sanding with the grain so you can get a good smooth finish without sanding marks in the wood

If you use a random orbit palm sander with 180 grit or higher it doesnt matter which direction you sand.
