i keep seeing fairly simple questions that get responses that go on for paragraphs and paragraphs...including links to other sites...i keep expecting footnotes and bibliographies...does anyone else just skip right past those responses? i mean, half the questions could be answered in a short sentence or two, followed with 'here's your sign!' if you know what i mean,,,

Depends on the question. Some are too vague or missing information, so a lengthy answer sometimes covers the bases and avoids the questioner having to append additional info. I like it when people give links and sources (to validate their answer), but if they're going to link the info, they should avoid expounding on it in the body of the answer. Some answers are overly verbose, and yes, I tend to skim past. At the same time, one-liners get old fast. Even a yes/no answer should be accompanied by a reason. A paragraph usually does the trick. Like this one. :)

There are specific venues for a plethora of cognative answers to a variety of questions. There are so many illitirations to take into account. The very basis of these subtexts is: who is asking the question? A very good reference to this is the askers past questions and answers. The questions is a better indicator of the type of personallity you are dealing with. The askers questions can illustrate his/her mindset. Is the person genuinely concerned with an answer? Is the person asking multiple similar questions? Is the person asking the same question multiple times?

There are people out there who ask questions for no other reason than to draw a response. Those are mostly the controversial questions on the board. They try to incite others into a raccous response. It is a way for them to get their jollies. There are people who ask assinine questions simply to feel superior. They may have an advanced knowledge of math, chemistry, or some other discipline and they want to lord it over others who may attempt to answer the questions that only they, the asker, has the knowledge and moxie to correctly identify. There are the young that ask inappropriate questions. These are mostly sexual in nature and it shows the natural curiousity of the young. Be very careful answering questions, you never know who you are answering.

The question itself can be a quagminre of diverse thinkings and have a lot of off track subtexts. This can be found mostly in the religious/theological areas of Yahoo answers. There are no simple answers to these complicated questions. Sometimes, there are no answers at all.

In summation of your example the answer is: YES! Simple is better.

Yes!

(Did I give the best answer? Of course not.)

When someone says something Gross, I usually respond, "Are you nuts?"

But, when someone asks a serious question, I think they deserve a few of my thoughts about their question.

If a person says, "What do you think?" - It usually means that person is unsure and wants a confirmation of their opinion.

Is that Bad? Not neccessarily ..... but in that case I would think the answer should be short and to the point- one way or another.

Links to other sites are rude and rather insulting to the person who asks the question. Why? Well, we all have the ability to search the net, we are looking for personal answers (believe it or not). How is it rude? Well, it is like calling a company and being referred from one place to another, without any consideration to why we are being transferred. __ It is called the "run-around".

And none of us like the "run-around"

Smiles -.

It's hard when you ask the question and it's the only response you get. But soemtimes a long answer is warranted. I just hate when people are ranting and raving instead of giving a good answer.

yes, the shortest, simplest answers are the best, the longer ones can get kind of annoying, and say exactly the same thing as the shorter ones.

Sometime it is, sometimes NOT. I have been enormously helped by both short and novel length answers! Short ones are often smart arsed ones, notably.

I rarely spend my time reading them. Some people have control issues and it shows.
