just curious how many people rock them, lay them down and walk away or put them in the swing. And what about the bedtime ritual every night?

We found that establishing a routine early was the key. When our son was smaller (i.e. less than 1 year) he would get a bath and get put into his PJ's and then he had his night-time bottle (usually around 8:30 pm). He fell asleep (most times without finishing the whole bottle) and we would tuck him into his crib. Now that he is older, there is no bottle, but the night time routine is the same. Tub time around 7:30pm, PJ's, grab a sippy cup of milk and into bed. He'll drink his milk and then hand me the cup saying "All done!" and then snuggle with his blankets, blow kisses and go to sleep. Some nights he will talk or sing to himself for a bit; other nights, he drifts right off to sleep. We got lucky with such a great kid but I also think establishing a predictable routine helped out a lot too.

Mine goes right into his crib at 8:00 every night and he is awake and I say good-night and walk away, this has worked wonders for all 4 of my children and they are all now great sleepers!! I will read them all a book in the living room before bed, so they know what is next.

My son doesn't need rocked, he just needs wrapped tight and held with his bottle or pacifier (9 wks) and he goes to sleep. My 16 month old takes her cup and lays down and is asleep within 30 mins.

I never did the whole bedtime routine thing- just nursed my daughter to sleep. It worked great and vacations and stuff never messed anything up- she still slept great no matter where we were. Eventually she outgrew the need to be nursed to sleep.

I nurse to sleep as mother nature intended. Breastmilk is full of hormones that make both mom and baby happy, relaxed, and sleepy!

OMG!!! she's 5 years old now, but you made me remember of how we would put her to sleep...it was midnight, and we would drive her around, she would fall asleep, but as soon as she got outta the car she would wake up, so we would sit at the edge of the bed and bounce her to sleep...wow thank you for reminding me, me and my hubby will have a laugh tonite!
