As humans began to develope understanding and intelligence they were for the most part small groups for protection probly rarely over 8 to 10.
In the early years they mated freely with each other much like the other mamals. They mated for extending the tribe, without a thought of joint parenthood.
Even animals have built in genetic codes to cause them to seek mates outside of their family to keep the gene stock strong. These new mamals evolving into humans we know today were no exception.
As tribes began to associate with, and trade with teach other and to seek mates form different tribes it was natural that the weaker, submissive female would go with her mate to his tribe or home land. It was also natural that she would become known by his last name (once last names started to come into use.)
This was a way of idenitify her and her tribe she adopted via her new mate or husband.
Unfortunately females were virtual slaves or property (as they are in most muslim countries today) . This is the main factor which led to marriage. When is not really known.
Some men do take their wives names. It's custom only in free countries but law in some for a wife to take her husbands last name. It should not be a requirement anywhere. Here many professional women do not change their names and some will hypen their with their husbands to show their both names. example Anne jones marries Bill Browhill and becoems Anne Jones-browhill.

No one knows when marriage actually began as it began much before recorded history.

Marriage was a cultural thing that gradually grew into an institution or family.
