What is that thing called that cartoon characters wear on their heads when they are doctors? You know the silver circle with the black band. Does anyone know what it was called or what it was used for?

its a mirror. traditionally worn by surgeons before electrical headlights. it aims the light down into the space a surgeon is working in to illuminate the field better.

It's a headlamp. The black thing is the strap that holds it on. The silver circle is a 1-D picture of a lamp. Doctors don't use them anymore because they have nurses to hold lights.
