I think you mean "freedman," which means a slave who has been freed. Winston has freed himself from a kind of slavery. The state of Oceania (and presumably the states of Eurasia and Eastasia also) destroys each seemingly "free" person by getting to the person, discovering what makes the person most fearful, and then using that fear. Winston is terrified of rats. His jailers arrange a mask over his face through which they can feed rats to get at him. In his terror, Winston cries, "No! Don't do it to me! Do it to Julia!" Julia was his girlfriend whom he loved in defiance of the order. Once Winston says such an awful thing, he knows, his jailers know, and we the readers know that everything is over for him, his life, and his supposed freedom.

Plot Overview
Winston Smith is a low-ranking member of the ruling Party in London, in the nation of Oceania. Everywhere Winston goes, even his own home, the Party watches him through telescreens; everywhere he looks he sees the face of the Party’s seemingly omniscient leader, a figure known only as Big Brother. The Party controls everything in Oceania, even the people’s history and language. Currently, the Party is forcing the implementation of an invented language called Newspeak, which attempts to prevent political rebellion by eliminating all words related to it. Even thinking rebellious thoughts is illegal. Such thoughtcrime is, in fact, the worst of all crimes. More…..

Read the book, you will find many parallels with what is going on in America right now. It is also a story that will haunt you for years.
Smith is an everyman who recoginzes that the truth is being subverted. He is a free man because he dares to think for himself. For each person there is an overwhelming fear that will destroy each of them. In room 101 each must face that fear. How you react determines how you will live in your life. Will you have the strengh to not betray that which is most precious to you just to save yourself?
The book is a facinating story and well worth taking the time.
WAR IS PEACE
FREEDOM IS SLAVERY
IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH
