In London about 1840. This is where Scrooge lives, and the year in which he is visited by the three spirits. Dickens wrote the story later than that. But Dickens often wrote about awful things from earlier times in order to shock. "It was not so long ago,..."he seems to say.

Summary
A mean-spirited, miserly old man named Ebenezer Scrooge sits in his counting-house on a frigid Christmas Eve. His clerk, Bob Cratchit, shivers in the anteroom because Scrooge refuses to spend money on heating coals for a fire. Scrooge's nephew, Fred, pays his uncle a visit and invites him to his annual Christmas party. Two portly gentlemen also drop by and ask Scrooge for a contribution to their charity. Dickens published this book in 1843. Dickens was British and this book is set in Victorian England and it is a social criticism of the horrible treatment and hardships of the poor.
