The Erie Canal goes from Albany at the Hudson River to Buffalo at Lake Erie so the answer would be Buffalo

Yep, It's Buffalo. I enjoy living on the Erie Canal at it's beginning port from the Niagara River (yep, Niagara Falls is just down the water a few miles).
Aside from being the bad end of snow jokes these days, Buffalo enjoyed a huge growth in economic, industrial as well as social areas. A world's fair was held there.
