I had to have it towed last night because it died all of a sudden. It had been running fine all night, but I did notice it was just a tad slow to start. That night while waiting on the truck I got it started but it would only idle. If it was revved, it would die. It was hissing loudly, but I didn't find the problem until today.

Today, I found a vacuum leak that was causing the hiss. I hooked the line back up, and the car still took a long time to start. Once started, it idles smoothly and I can rev it all the way up but if I press the gas too quickly, it will die. I took it down the road and it has a pretty bad loss of power, and it hesitates and stutters now and then. After I shut it off I noticed a sulfur-like smell.

Fuel pressure reads 40 pounds, which is in operating range I believe. Fuel/air mix reads extremely rich when I rev the engine while parked.

Sometimes when it chugs while trying to start, I will hear a mechanical "chink" followed by an electronic beep on the drivers side. It also blows some smoke out of the intake when it chugs. It doesn't smoke at all while running.

A new pump will hold at about 47 psi. yours is at 40 and I don't know if it holds pressure when you need more out of it. It still seems a Little low so I would say the fuel pump is crapping out on you.
here is a note about a common problem on those from a reliability database:
"Common problems on this vehicle are failures of the EGR Passages and the Opti-Spark Ignition System (Distributor Cap/Rotor/Coil Wire) (PFI V8 engines). Failure of the Opti-Spark Ignition System may prevent the vehicle from starting."

I believe you have a blocked catyalitic converter or muffler. To test this unbolt the exhaust in front of the converter..It will be loud but you should see an increase in the power department. Then you must connect the converter only .If you lack power again the converter is block. This can happen with mileage. If it runs ok connect the muffler and see what happens. Both of these pieces are affected buy short runs and condisation (which causes rust) because the engine does not reach a normal (hot) operating temperature

this sounds like you have a clogged exhaust....catylitic converter.

It also shows symptons of the timing chain...but normally when they go...they go. The distributor module comes to mind...you can remove that and have it tested at most parts stores. I'm leaning toward the distributor module.

Kennith sounds on the right track , if it is legal where you live you can find a "converter by pass pipe , for testing purposes only " that won't wake the neighbours. good luck

cloged fuel filter or bad fuel pump maybe bad timing check the fuel pressure as you rev your engine it should not drop much if at all

Sounds like that could be more than one problem.

Check the catalytic converter for starters.

Your timing sounds off with the hesitation. can be adjusted at the rotar. Sounds like you still have a vacuum leak as well.
