This is actually not an uncommon phenomina for a comic to be made into a movie before an anime. The reaosn being, a live action movie or sometimes animated movies for that matter, have the potential to draw in more money then an anime does. because of the high popularity of the show and the production company feeling it was easier to create a live action version of this manga compared to other popular mangas, they made the movie as a first step, which proved successfull as it was #1 in the Japanese box office and even the 2nd move was #1 for a long time as well. Making manga into anime or movies is a marketing idea, it's to make money off of something that has a strong fan base and when a manga can seemingly appeal to more then just the manga audiance, such as death note, the best way to market it would be to make a live action movie and then an anime later since the popularity would even be more higher after a movie and generates more profit since more viewers would be wwatching the show, seeing the commericals between the show, and buying the products.
In simplest terms, there is no rule as to a manga becomming a movie, OVA, or anime in a specific order, it's decided by the company who wants to make it in action which one would generate the largest amount of profit , satisfy the viwers, and lure in potential viewers.

Well first of all the movie sucked and the anime rocked! second they did that because the manga was popular and so they made a movie thinking that lot's of people will watch it since they love the manga so they'll probably get lots of money. But the movie was horrible! The animation stinked I mean the shinagami were looking horrible. and they put fake characters and fake storyline in it

There is a death note movie...but I definitely prefer the anime! But the movie is quite loud and emotional! What a thriller! LOL

I pretty much believe the movie came before the anime in release wise. But during both of their production. The anime was already getting drawn out and such abit before production of the movie started.

I think its because they wanted to test if the deathnote will be great in demand that's why they come out first as movie hehe..ok im joking. I think it's because the deathnote movie was made and released faster than series :p sorry i know i dont make sense here but hey, who cares, it was merely my opinion take it or leave it :p

maybe many people read the manga and it was popular....and you need many things and people to help you to make an anime...but making a movie is much more easier....
