I've had the same problems and went on-line looking for answers of which there were quite a few.... The one I went with as it seems so highly rated was to use cinnamon where the ants are (and suspected of coming in) around the house. Doesn't seem to kill them, but they don't like it and won't cross the cinnamon lines or go into the cinnamonated areas. Even wiping areas with a cinnamon-water soaked sponge seems to work well. The only problem is that this is temporary as I have to re-apply in 3-4 weeks (but by then the ant "season" seems to be over anyway).
Out side I followed the advice found on several websites which recommended a citrus oil application. There are even citrus anti-ant products out there! Unfortunately they were pretty expensive for the couple hundred square feet of anthills I have in the yard so I bought a gallon of concentrated citrus cleaner (much cheaper!), diluted it and watered the area with that (using a watering can) - and it worked amazingly well! I didn't need to do a second application at all and had no ants for the rest of the summer. We'll see if they come back next year.... But I'll be ready for them.

I got rid of mine in one night, but I caught them right as they were just coming into the house. I noticed that mine were coming into the kitchen via the back wall of the kitchen. They seemed to be most abundant right around the baseboards. So, I took some scotch tape and made a firm seal between the baseboards and the floor. They instantly started getting stuck. Then I went outside, took a kettle of boiling water, and drenched the siding on the back of the house with the boiling water. Never saw another one since, and it cost absolutely nothing.

Table salt. Give the hill a good shot of it. The will hopefully move farther from the house, and not be a problem. Now the salt may kill grass if you put it on too heavy, but it will soon fill back in.

Ants become a nuisance when they enter homes. Instead of spending money on costly pest control, you can get rid of ants by removing the food source and using soap water.
I found the information at http://www.pests.in useful.

salt.....sprinkle some salt around the hill. They don't much care for that. You wont be receiving the ant neighbour of the year award. (hope you weren't counting on it)

Call terminex or some bug people. The ants seem to be rebuilding the nest. They'll kill them for ever.
