The Motor City is perhaps the city’s most famous nickname. The name is the responsibly of one man, Henry Ford. His perfection of the Automobile production line secured Detroit’s place as the car capital of the world. For decades, Detroit was the home of the “Big Four” Ford, GM, Chrysler, and American Motors. Later, “The Big Three” as American Motors declined and was bought out. Detroit’s famous Rouge plant was and remains one of the single largest factory complexes in the world. The car influence on the city’s population and surrounding communities has been profound. One cannot drive very far in the city without seeing Car repair shops on almost every street. While Detroit’s influence in the automotive industry in the last few decades has waned, it still remains a pivotal center of influence within the industry.

detroit at one time was the headquarters for all the major american vehicle manufacturers. therefore it was called detroit motor city. Some mistake an engine as a motor. An engine is an item powered by fuel..where as a motor is something electric.
However..an engine in a car is referred to an a motor..hence..detroit motor city...
Think of the term "detroit muscle"...the dodge charger..the camaro..the torino...pontiac...they all originated in detroit.
