Many things can cause it. You didn't describe when you have numbness, under what circumstances, how continuously, etc... That makes guessing kind of hard.

One thing to keep in mind is that feeling is just an electro-chemical transmission from your finger to your brain. The problem has to be that this is somehow getting blocked. Here are some possible causes:

- Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. This is most likely if you get the numbness in the morning upon awakening, after repetitive hand motions, hard manual labor, etc... One quick test is to put your hands together like you are praying and lower your hands until your arms are at a right angle to your hands. Hold it for 30 seconds. If the numbness kicks in CTS is a good guess. This is not something to be joked with. Find a doctor who is a specialist in repetitive stress injuries to the hands. Don't just see a hand surgeon or general orthopedist. CTS is very complex and can cause permanent damage. There are many simple treatments including temporary using of NSAIDs (eg: Advil) and exercise routines that can totally cure this. Surgery is also an option but really a last ditch one in my mind as the success rate doesn't seem high enough to warrant the discomfort or risk.

- Reynaud's Syndrome. Typically when this hits the finger will go white. Cold weather, cold water, and being cold typically set this off. As long as this doesn't get worse, it is not serious. Wear gloves often. Also try swinging your arms in large arcs to get the circulation back (polar explorers do this trick). Warming them up with warm water also helps. If this gets worse or is constant, see a doctor as it can get very bad (I'll omit the details as the worst case scenario as it is very infrequent but it isn't pretty). Reynaud's is caused by the blood leaving the affected extremity (hence the white color) typically due to incorrect regulation of the body's thermostat. Sometimes the cause of the incorrect regulation can be fixed, other times not.

- Thoracic Outlet Syndrome. This is a neck/shoulder impingement of the nerve that goes to some part of the arm or hand. I'm not sure there is a simple test for this. An MRI might show it. So too might an EMG (which might also catch CTS). Both of these require interaction with a doctor. A physiatrist is probably the best bet for doctor type although sports medicine doctors are frequently good too (orthopedic surgeons can also work but beware as many are too knife-happy for my tastes). Typically physical therapy can help with this. If it it worsens, surgery might be an option but it would have to be pretty bad before I'd look into that.

- Stroke. Probably not too likely to just take out a finger but a stroke can kill little pieces of the brain and no reason it couldn't destroy the brain's sensory neurons for your middle finger. This is very unlikely.

- Tumor. A tumor along the nerve somewhere or in the brain could block the signal. Once again, not very likely.

Could be some carpal tunnel coming along. I don't know your age or your job which would help. Which hand do you wear your watch on? Consider changing hands. Stretch your neck before going to bed and in the morning, If you have a stressful job do so during the day once or twice. An inexpensive wrist brace can be acquired at most Drug stores and they will work for either hand. Remove all jewelry especially rings and try wearing it at night during sleep. If the problem purists see your doctor soon. Carpel tunnel syndrome is serious business. Don't let it get to the point that 3 fingers are constantly asleep. It defiantly effects your lively hood and can lead to if not treated early disability, then go try and get a job, you will find yourself way up the creek with no paddle.

Isolated numbness of a single digit, in the absence of injury, is very unusual. Possible reasons:
Early onset of median nerve compression ("carpal tunnel")
Injury to the nerve, usually blunt, such as catching a baseball barehanded
Very rarely, problems with the nerve itself- peripheral neuropathy
Even more rarely as an early symptom of a central problem, such as multiple sclerosis, or a stroke
Again rarely as a result of a problem in the spine in the neck "pinched nerve"

If you have unexplained persistent numbness then you need to be evaluated. You can find a fellowship trained hand surgeon in most hospitals of any size.
