My friend's former husband has retired (at the age of fifty) and she has been told that, as a retiree, he does not have to pay child support. This is depite his consideral wealth and an almost obscene pension. Can this really be so?

She has been told wrong he is still liable until his savings reach a certain level or the child is 18 which ever comes first.

No! the judge doesn't care if he's retired, but he/she will care if this guy is supporting his child!
Support will be based on his net worth and income. Nothing will stop a judge from ordering child support!

Who told her that? Her ex, maybe? Maybe trying to get out of his obligations.

He needs to pay until the child(ren) reach 18.

i've never heard of such a thing. your legally finacially responsible for your child until they reach 18. i suggest she goes and see's a lawyer, and appeal that decision if it is indeed a decision. its crap init. you would think ppl with money would want the best for their kids, o no wait a min, ppl with money tend to all be greedy. i hope his retirement sucks
