I am 17 years old, and I'm tired of living like such a damn pig. The problem is, I've been a slob for my whole life - I remember crumbling up my assignmens (to be turned in!) and cramming them in my book bag in elementary school. I don't do that anymore, but my room is SO messy and I hate, hate, HATE cleaning. (When I have a choice to spend the weekend cleaning my room or studying for a test, I ALWAYS pick the latter, as much as I hate studying too.) Cleaning makes me angry, for some reason. I usually end up kicking or breaking something out of frustration or in tears from some minor mishap while cleaning. When putting things away, I always wait till the last minute to put away things from the living room and doing the dishes (but I still do it, I don't leave it out intentionally, but I forget at times). How can I develop an "everything must be neat and in order" mentality? Is it even possible? Am I hopeless?

I personally enjoy my room messy, as it gives a sense of comfort to not have to worry about a single, teensy speck of dust on the floor. I don't know how to become a neat freak, but cleaning may be more bearable if you give yourself a cookie for every distinct area of your room you clean up. (Ex. under the bed, the half of open floor closest to the door)

The best thing i can suggest is that you get a maid service to clean for you. Use your study skills to get a good education then get a good paying job to pay for a cleaning person. "To thine own self be true" You can change your ways if you want to but only by your own will can you be consistent. I hate to clean as well so i don't do it religiously. I do it when necessary and sometimes have someone else do it. I don't beat myself up over it because it's my choice. However, there is a difference between clutter and unsanitary; clutter is my game...I don't like filth! You could be more proactive or defensive in your actions and try to prevent making a bigger mess by doing little things such as putting your dirty clothes into a basket (instead of the floor) or rinsing your dish before leaving it in the sink for a week with food on it...Wipe as you go, clean as you go, put up as you take off...etc....these small steps keep the pig's sty at bay! Besides, no one wants to deal with a neat FREAK, or any other freak for that matter.

Yeah I am having that same problem now. I HATE IT!!! It makes me go crazy. I can keep the rest of the house clean but when it comes to my BEDROOM I have no idea what to do. I start and then I start to read this and that and looking through this old thing or that old thing. I do not actually clean I just go through all my junk.
I was raised with a maid, so it took me a long time to figure out the cleaning thing living on my own. I have a problem still.
I can not believe that it is an everyday, constant thing. Very frustrating. It is like you live to clean.
I need help also. I have hired maids to come to my place but they do not exactly ORGANIZE my crap or put it in the right places, that is my biggest problem.

Give yourself exactly 10 minutes before bed to clean and organize as much as you can. Set the timer, do it every night. Depending on the state of your room, it shouldn't take too long to get it in shape. Once you've got it, keep up the 10 minute rule. When the room eventually takes less than 10 minutes, use the remaining time on another room. Make a race against the clock. Give yourself rewards, like if you beat the clock and are working on another room you get a new pair of shoes or something you want. It works, and it's fun to challenge yourself. Soon, you will have learned the discipline it takes to be a neater person. It worked for me.

A room can be messy, but don't let it get to the point of it being too messy, to where it's a chore to clean. If you bring in a few pop cans and leave some clothes on the floor, no big deal, the problem is when they start piling up. So constantly update your room.

I would ask for someone in your household to help you straighten up and clean your room so you can get things in order. From there, you can spend as little as 15 minutes a day just to straighten up your room, and once a week do a regular cleaning. By being organized in this way, cleaning day will be a lot less tramatic on you.
