Unless they travel, there is no advantage to owning a laptop. Laptops cost more initially, and cost more to repair and upgrade. Desktops are cheaper and can be repair easily. Otherwise if this person does not travel on a regular basis buying a notebook is a waste of money.

The major ones of course are portability and space requirements. If you get one with wireless capability (and most these days have them) you can even walk around the house with them (and still access the Internet) and in many cases access the Internet at your nearby book store or coffee shop. In your case, sounds like you might want to convince this person to loan you their computer without having to disconnect a bunch of wires!!!!! Just don't expect great performance with any real time games :-)
