Sometime between last night and this morning, my daughter's hamster got away. He is kept in a cage in the livingroom but he is no where to be found in that room. We have looked in the dining room and kitchen but he is not there either. Does anyone have any clue where this stupid thing may be? I am very worried because I have 3 cats and 3 dogs and a litter of 6 puppies. I do not want to have a dead hamster on my hands!

First of all contain the big animals if you can. If you set set up a tall bucket (5gl bucket works great) with some veggies or other desirable food in the bottom and a ramp from the floor to the top, the hamster will smell the food in the middle of the night, go up the ramp, and fall in the bucket for the food. By morning you should have a well fed hamster in a bucket. Be sure to do this overnight as they are nocturnal and will be in search for food. Good Luck!

Back in college, my hamster escaped and we found him in the couch the next day. You might want to carefully turn your couch on the side and pull off that thin cloth cover across the bottom to see inside. You might also want to keep the cats out of the living room for a day or so, and put some of your hamster's favorite food near where his cage was...and keep your eyes open. He might re-appear. Good luck! (:

ok....that was a very dumb answer. I had a Russian Dwarf Hamster once (they are very small...damn hard to find) She wandered into the couch once while i was cleaning her cage (she managed to squeeze through the bars while i was changing the food). If you have any furniture around, Carefully remove the cushions (if you can) or gently run your hand through the small gap between cushions. Otherwise, I would go with the food trail idea the others have mentioned.

well i have two dwarf hamsters ...anyway you should shut some doors in your house. and see if your hamster is there. if it isnt then shut the door. Well then you should also use a bucket and a ladder (small one of course) for your hamster to climp up on and drop to the bucket with the towel inside and food too. so that is one idea. Also you can make a trail of food. and think of a best possible place where it would be.

Hamsters are master escape artists.

You need to check under and behind things now.. The refrigerator, dressers, couches, tv stands. Even if it looks too small, look there. They can get into some tiny little places.

Good luck. I hope you find him.

My guess you have a dead, swallowed hamster on your hands. Sounds like you needed to get rid of a few anyway!
