Under the Constitution of 1789, voters were supposed to vote for Electors in a College of Electors (they still do!) The Electors were supposed to elect the President. Today, the Electors' votes are promised to each candidate.

The first parties were formed as a result of disagreements among Thomas Jefferson, who formed the Republican Democrats, and John Adams, who was of the Federalists. Washington was with Adams, though he was "above parties." Aaron Burr was once a vice-president of the U.S., because the vice-president in those days was he who got the second highest number of votes for President. But Burr went on to try to form a new country out of the territories of the West next to the Mississippi.
