or 'travelled' become 'traveled'? what happened to the 2nd 'L'?

I would imagine it started when "creative spelling" became acceptable in schools. That is where children aren't taught how to spell properly but are told to spell things however they see fit. This was started in an effort to preserve our children's delicate little egos so that when they get to college and actually fail at something for the first time, they immediately run to antidepressants in an effort not to commit suicide.

I know that gramatically speaking u should have 2 ll between two vowels, but there are some exceptions, the word "traveled" is one of them.

In some other english speaking countries (Great Britain, Canada) , it is (or used to be) with two 'L's. However, in the U.S. it's with one.

i didn't even know it had a second "l" but i guess as time change grammar changes too.
