Mexico DF is like New York or Paris, all types of goods are readily available. Small monitors for blood pressure and blood sugar if he needs them, large sizes of aspirin and antacid, expensive there...socks and T-shirts if he is a large size. Lots of peanut butter and tuna in all grocery stores.

You can find peanut butter and washclothes there.

Mexico city is one of the biggest cities in the world. Most of what you have over in the US is there.

I dont think there is essential's you'd want to bring, i do know tho that electronics are more expensive over there.

If he likes tuna, how about a couple packs of those in the fresh flavor pouch. They are already drained, and since its a pouch, you don't need a can opener. My hubby is down in El Salvador and he says he misses tuna from back home (U.S.) Maybe Vienna Sausages and some Ritz crackers too? There were also a couple of sodas they didn't carry down in E.S. that I missed when I went to visit, like Vernors. What's his favorite soda or juice? Candy is always welcome in gift baskets as well.

Depends on where he is moving..in or near big city? Three pronged electric plug adapters and extension cords. If he has large feet...shoes because can't find lg.sizes here. Spices...common ones in states are not common here. Tablecloths...they have veeery expensive and very ugly here...nothing medium and not much choice. Jeans...very expensive here. If he is tall or big...needs to bring plenty of clothes. i just noticed you said he will be in Mexico CITY...so should be able to find most things...except lg. sizes, spices. Nice thing to do for him.

Give him a English-Spanish Dictionary, (if he doesn't speak Spanish) In Mexico there's everything to live like a king, if you have the money to buy it.
