I use vonage!

you get a router, you plug the the special(one is different than the others) hole into the cable modem or dsl modem.

you plug the computer into one of the regular (probably 3 or 4) holes.

your phone should then work and the computer should too.

there are all sorts of config options on the router... but if you get the phone to work you have the router connected to the correct hole.

I've called vonage support and asked for one of the guys in jersey... better than their off-shore support! call during the day for a jersey boy!

I suggest you get a friend who knows some basic networking to look at your set up. Obviously when you get the Internet you are not going through the router but connecting directly to your cable box/DSL modem. You don't say which you have. The reason the phone won't work is that your computer has pulled the one IP Address available from your cable box. You need to have the router get that IP address and both your computer and Vonage phone box pull an IP from the router.

If this is all Greek to you then you definitely need to have a friend look at your set up. Sorry but that is the best I can do. Networking uses particular words that have specific meanings. If you don't understand them you need to find someone who does to help you with the set up.

.
The first thing you need to do is:
1. Make sure that your ISP (Vonage) and "see" your modem, and can ping your computer.
You MUST DO THIS by calling them on the phone, and the Tech,
will at no cost walk you through the process.
Do it, that is the Tech's JOB.

2. Second, if all that is fine, then I suggest that your router "driver" may be the problem, or your internal NIC
Network Interface Card.
You can Go to your device’s manufacturer site online and download the most current driver to a folder on your desktop. It should be free from them.
a. To determine the manufacturer
look in your Device Manager section.
b. Go to START > RIGHT click MyComputer >
select PROPERTIES >
c. tab for HARDWARE > click button for Device Manager
d. In Device Manager, scroll down to your device, double click and get the name of the manufacturer.
e. Go online to the manufacturer site > find DRIVERS
f. Download the driver you need.

3. Go to your desktop, find the driver, double click and INSTALL the driver.

4. Restart your computer > it will "see" the new driver and may ask you if you want to use it
instead of the one you have...say YES

this is not the answer to your question, but there are other services much better than vonage. For instance, skype offers a full year of unlimited calls to anyone on any phone within the US and Canada for just $15.

I am not familiar with vonage but I suspect that it uses a specific port. A port is an extention of your regular IP address. They range from 1-65565 or something like that. Look in your vonage handbook and see if it needs a specific port opened. Then connect to the rounter through your browser and open that port for the phone. I expect you have your DMZ or "demilitarized" ethernet port activated, and this is the port that is working when you switch connections. The DMZ setting forwards all ports to a single ethernet port (there are two types of ports, physical eithernet ports, and IP ports - usually referred to example:"192.168.1.1:8080" :8080 is the IP port number)

Good luck, this is hard to do the first time but a cinch the second time.

Probably need to buy a central filter to go inbetween the line in and the modem/router. Had a similar problem and that fixed it for me - Get one at any electronics shop (can also be called a central splitter). Hope this helps.
