This is a debatable topic, but it was not slavery. In my oppinion, the cause of the civil war can be seen in the economic division within the north and south. The north maintained an industrial economy, while the south featured a agricultural economy. Due to the falling price of cotton, and the maintaing of an import tariff, the south felt alienated and powerless. This is further exemplified in the election of 1860, in which Lincoln was victorious due to the strong representation of the north and west. This is just one of many issues that culminated into the civil war.

It was because the South thought that since the North wasn't being fair, such as having more representative in the House and charging more for exports going to the South, so since in the Declaration of Independence it says that if the country doesnt like the form of government that is in place they can abandon it and start a new one, well since the South figured that out the broke off from the Union forming the Confederacy and the North said what they did was wrong so they went to war....most people think that it was just over slavery....although most of the North was against it wasnt, it was because of money,

So far most everyone has gotten a piece of it. There was a strong philosophical difference between the southern states and the northern states as to what rights the constitution gave to the federal government. In the matter of slavery there were strong disagreement as to whether the federal government had the right to legislate how a state would enter the union. They wanted Kansas to enter as a slave state. The abolishionists wanted it to be a free state. Kansas was important because it would change the balance of power in the congress. When Lincoln was elected with the Replubicans in power in the congress, the south realized its lifestle was in jepardy. Since it was not explictly forebidden in the constitution, The south chose to secede. LIncoln responded by compelling Unionization.

whiel slavery was a reason it is debatable that it was the main cause, even Lincoln said that he would have kept slavery if it meant that he could preseerve the union. states rights and the desire to feel that the southern states were in power to control thier own destiny also contributed, the south felt that the north was leaving them behind, not considering them in their political decisins and that they were out to destroy the southern tradition, at the time of the 1840s and 50s, teh north and south were almost two destinct countries, the north focused on industrilzationa ndt he desire to improve productivity and they believed this was nbot posssible w slave labor as there was no inherent interest for a slave to improve production. the south was more suited for agrarian production, and the southern mind preferred teh life style wherein they felt they controlled thier own destiny, this manifested itself int eh plantation life, additionally they did nto want northern ideas influencing the poor whites of the south either as the plantation owners controlled politics and society and they preferred that, those in power wanted to stay in power. several judicial issues such as the dred scott case compunded the souths hatred for the north,a dn fueld the fire, slavery was THE economic basis of power and wealth in the south, abolishing slaverywould destroy thier power.

most people think it is because the slaves, and the whole freedom thing, that had some to do with it, but the main reason is because the south wanted become thier own the nation. so that they could have slaves, and make their own laws. the north was against this, and fought to see that the united states stayed the united states
hope that helps ; )

It wasnt slavery... Lincoln said that if he could preserve the union without abolishing slavery he would do so. The main problem was secession in the South and Lincoln wanting to preserve the unity of the US.

state soverentity...each state wanted the right to decide on how to run themselves, to decide on issues like slavery. The federal government wanted to establish themselves as having the authority to rule on issues that were necessary to preserve the union. The reason was state soverntity, slavery was a subsection of this.
