As a dental hygienist I can tell you it is perfectly safe to bleach your teeth. Let me start off with this though....crowns, bonding ( tooth colored fillings ) and any other foreign material on the teeth WILL NOT bleach under any circumstance or system currently being used today. I am not sure if when you had your corwns done they were done a little whiter than your natural teeth or if they were done to match your natural teeth perfectly. Remember, they will not change color, so take that to heart if you do bleach and they were made to match your color now.
As far as systems to bleach, there are many. If you are looking for something you can do at home and at minimal cost, probably Crest WhiteStrips are the best on the market today. Over the counter bleaching products have come alooong way in the last 10 years. If you are looking to do something through your dentist I would recommend the old school bleaching trays and gel. I know there are laser systems such as Zoom out there now, but let me explain.
Your teeth even once bleached will have to be redone every month or so depending on your habits and mother nature. Red wines, tobacco use and many other foods and drink will darken the teeth. Also, mother nature plays a hand here as well. As we get older, our teeth lose that youthful white appearance. It is part of life.
With all this said, you will need to touch up on your bleaching at least once a month or more/less depending on habits. The bleaching trays you can get from your dentist are going to be the cheaper route and you can go in and buy touch up tubes of bleaching gel as needed. With the laser systems out there, first off, there are no facts yet on long term use of these systems. To gain factual feedback from a system such as these can sometimes take 10 -15 years....most of these systems have not been out there that long. There are no reports yet to back up whether laser systems are harmful or not harmful to the teeth or root/nerve system of the teeth. Remember, teeth are porous ( hence the staining problems from food and drink) Personally as a dental professional I would never use a laser whitening system on my teeth. I use the bleaching trays. Not only that, these other systems are going to be more expensive and you will still need the touch ups every so often which will result in needing the trays later on. This adds up to two expenses when you could just get the one. Granted, the in office one hour systems are immediate results, where as the bleaching trays take from a week to 2 weeks sometimes. A little longer to see substantial results, but more cost efficient.
So, you need to decide if you are happy just using OTC ( over the counter) system vs. a system through your DDS.
If you choose to go through your DDS, do you want immeidate results or are you willing to wait a little longer for results. Let me also state with the bleaching trays through the DDS you will see results within a day or two but maximum results will take about a week.
And most importantly, your crowns will not bleach. So, if you end up with whiter teeth than the crowns, you may down the road have to look into replacing those as well.
I use the Shofu Rewhite through my dentist and have been satisfied with my results since day one.

Are you just referring to the White Strips by Crest? It's no big deal just put them on your teeth for 30 minutes a night. However, since you have crowns be careful that you do not go whiter than the crowns. My dentist told me the same thing.
When you first start to use them your teeth and gums may be a little more sensitive but after a while you will get used to them.
Good luck!

I've had an experience with teeth whitening. It was the best decision I've made in my life so far and the best investment I made for myself. Your teeth especially your smile is one of the first things people notice about you. I, too, also have crowns in my front teeth but that didn't stop me from getting the procedure.
The procedure was done by a professional dentist, it was done in about an hour and a half, and the results was a success. :o) A whitening gel was applied to my teeth carefully and then it was activated by their patented gentle blue light. The process was supposed to be repeated two times but they added another application for better results. They even gave me a MP3 player to pass the time. There was only minimal discomfort, like tiny toothaches, because my teeth was exposed to the air for a long period of time. It soon went away the next day.
It's clinically-proven to be safe and effective. It's safe on your tooth enamel, for fillings and dental work, and safe for your gums. Since it's safe for fillings and dental work, it will not change the color if you have either of them. There's been warnings that teeth whitening makes your teeth more sensitive but that hasn't been the case for me.
Now I could smile with confidence and most of my friends and family notice the difference. It's been 7 months since I had my teeth whitened and I've maintained it by just using their toothpaste. The results could last for many years to come if you take care of your teeth.
Good luck with whatever decision you make. :)

I got my teeth bleached and it was fine. My teeth didn't fall out or a I didn't die. Jeez where are these people getting their teeth done?! It did cost alot ($500) and for the first day your teeth feel like nails on a chalkboard. The whitening only lasted about 6 months though.

***teeth not teeths :( teeth already IS The plural form of tooth. No s needed. GAH!!!
& it depends. It is "Safe" for now until they prove that it isn't but some people are more sensitive to the harsh chemicals used in whitening teeth. Like mine. My gums hurt a lot so if you gums hurt you should take ib profin or something before whitening to numb the pain. It's worth it because you dont want your teeth to look nasty!

They seem fine to me, whitening toothpaste will do the trick though. Strips and other methods can be harsh and from my experience really irritated my gum's and also can strip teeth of enamel and make your teeth feel very weird.
