I'm a fifth-year journalism teacher and newspaper adviser. I work after school a lot getting the paper ready with the students and when I go home I have NO desire to grade anything. So everything piles up and causes a ton of stress for me at the end of each grading period. How do I stop this vicious cycle?

I mark twice a day for forty-five minutes each time. I do this seven days a week. I find it easy to schedule and at the end of the cycle I have very little to do.
I have 60 students and all tests and exams are essay type. (my choice)

I used to feel like you. I used to think every paper had to have a grade on it. You have to realize that not all of the papers that students do, need to be graded. You can spot check the papers for certain things. Use rubrics when possible. I realize that in journalism, it probably causes you to read a lot of essays, but you don't have to grade every single one. It took me a long time to relax about it.

Grade before you get home. Make home the place of no grading. You're already spending time at school on other things. Include grading papers with that. That way when you get home, some of it will be done and you can truly and completely relax.

Grade 'X' number of papers a day (period!!).

What is wrong with procrastination?? Really.

Adjust assignments so they are shorter (but then you will have more papers more often).

Enjoy the ride more, some of the things kids do is hilarious, money can not buy that entertainment.

I'm a 5th grade teacher also, I have my kiddos do almost all of their grading in class (trade and grade).

Don't worry about privacy issues since the US Supreme Court said 6 years ago that a right to privacy for such papers doesn't exist.

It gives them immediate feedback so you don't have to worry about parent complaints of 'Where's my kid's grades?'

That way, you'll only need to check their accuracy quickly before you give them their 'official' grade.
