Austria-Hungary believed that the assassin had been helped by the Government of Serbia, so they wanted to attack. Russia was Serbia's ally; they tried to get Serbia and AH to reach a diplomatic solution, but were committed to help Serbia if AH attacked. AH was weaker than Russia and would not have gone to war with Serbia, but then Germany assured AH that they would attack Russia if Russia tried to defend Serbia. France was committed to help Russia if Russia was attacked by Germany. The German plan for fighting both France and Russia involved attacking Belgium, when Belgium was invaded, the UK also joined against Germany.
This all happened very fast. AH declared War on Serbia on July 28, and the UK, the last of the major powers to initailly declare war, did so on Aug 4th.
The Ottoman Empire joined later in 1914, hoping to gain Russian lands in Central Asia.
That's the immediate cause, anyway.
