If you live in a big city, where there is work for actors, the following answers apply.
First, find out if there is an agency in town that specializes in hiring film extras. If there is, you can often send them a regular snapshot of your face, and some personal information. You may get calls sooner than you think. This pays a bit, often involves a free lunch, and lets you find out what it's like to work on a movie set.
Auditions for community theater productions are often listed in newspapers or on local news online pages.
Auditions for more professional theater may be harder to find, in some cases. In Chicago, you can use Performink. It's online.
You will need a professional headshot. This generally costs a few hundred dollars.
You should strongly consider taking acting classes. The teacher, in many cases, can answer questions about the acting scene in your city.
If you don't live in a city, you may have to get to one.
Don't fall for bogus classified ads that say, "Actors and Models Needed."

the best things to do is to go on the net or buy at a local newstand a paper called Backstage, this is a listing of all casting calls . There are also casting agents, but beware dont let them lure you into some expensive photo shoot. take a photo of yourself and inlarge to an 8x10 and start sending out. Its very competive and very cut throat, a little pointer, what every you audition for get into that character before you go...do a litlle skit with some friends or persons with an ob jective opinio. they will give you some honest anwers whether part if for you for not. good luck..also you can try another publication called the Ross report, they have listing of casting agents and talent scouts.

Hook up with a talent agency. If you qualify, they may start you off as SBE (Small, Bit, Extra). IF you luck in, then I would suggest that you join an actors union or guild of sorts.
