computer: composed of softwares and hardwares
the process are input, process and output, these are the basics.
restoring files requires softwares that are intended for restoring. like "easyrecovery pro" this can recover files even from formatted harddrives, on a different volume labels.

if the hard drive isnt booting you can try booting off the OS CD and running chkdsk /r and fixboot, then if that doesnt work u might want to try running fixmbr Good luck!
