I am a guy so I will give you what I think isn't to subtle, but also isn't you coming right out and saying it.
You have a few options, what I think is the best one would be to ask him for help on something. Be it a math problem, getting something out of your locker etc. This makes a guy definatly notice you and it usually ends up striking up furthur conversation.
The other option would be to invite him to come hangout with you and your friends on the weekend. Dont make it just you and him or else thats really a tell tale sign for him. Say a bunch of us are going to a movie want to come.

just go up to the guy and say ex
"Hey Name, I just wanted to tell you that I really enjoy taking to you, and I have to say that I think I'm kinda feelin' you too.. if your not doing anything tonight I thought we might hang out I would def like to get to know you more I think your a really cool guy" give him a wink and a number and turn around all sexi.. lol and work your way

I would ask trusting friends about him and try to find out more about him. Try saying hi to him when you pass him, you never know he might just say hi back.

Duh! Tell him you like him, or have a friend do it. If he says something jerky like "Gross!" or "I don't care..." then he's a loser, if he isn't and likes you, he'll be cool
