most reasonably new computers tend to have both the ports and the cables colour coded to avoid confusion.

but anyhow, that wasn't what you asked - so here is a diagram:

EDIT:
@annewithafan - yep it relates to the question very well, although it should be pointed out that there is no picture that covers 100% of the possible ports on the back of a pc but the above picture has all of the common ports shown and labelled.

Was your computer brought new, if the answer is yes then you should have a small book-let and a diagram in picture form to show you what all those bits at the back of the computer mean. failing that why not invite a friend around who has a computer to show, and to explain what it all means, maybe help you connect it all up for you as well. good luck

Well, first you need to tell us what type of computer you have. Then we can give you a definite diagram.

But in general, the monitor is more than likely a VGA Port:

or DVI port:

This connects into its like part.

If you have any USB devices, those ports will look like this:

Keyboards and mice are usually either USB or PS/2

(This site actually holds everything that I've been describing. I'll refer to it from now on.)

Printers are done with Parellel ports.

The Ethernet Jack (which you will use if you are doing LAN or High Speed internet) looks like a large phone jack. A regular modem looks like a regular phone jack.

That's all of the basics.

the one shaped like a power cord plugs into the spot shaped like an outlet. the mouse cable goes into one of the little circular spots, and the keyboard goes in teh other. your speaker cable goes in the middle headphone like jack. your internet cable goes in the phone jack slot. the moniter cable goes in the only slot it will fit in. and the printer one goes in the really big slot.

if you look at the end of the cables and the available plugs. it doesnt take long to do process of elimination, the only 2 that will give you trouble are keyboard and mouse since theyre basically teh same thing anyways.

with the manual of either the pc or motherboard, the motherboard manuals are usually available to download from the manufacturers site.

but just have a play around, you can't really get them wrong - only one type of cable fits into each bit.

the speakers should have little pictures under the input bits with a picture of a mic on one and headphone or something on the other so you know which is which, or speakers is green, mic is pink and blue is line in if they are coloured

Modern computers will have colour codes for some of the cables, matching the cable to the fitting.

The cables which aren't colour coded will be obvious to connect.

Most computer cables have different shaped plugs so it should be a case of square plug square hole. Good luck
