First, start knitting across the row, for two stitches. There will be two stitches on the right needle. Now take the back stitch, bring it over the first stitch, and take that one stitch off the needle. There should now be just one stitch on the right needle. Now knit another stitch, and repeat the process of taking the back stitch over the first and off the needle. Do this all the way across. On the last stitch, cut the string with a few inches of extra yarn, take the extra and put it through the lone loop to make a knot, then weave in the extra yarn into your scarf, and you're done!
And you don't necessarily need a crochet hook, you should just be careful to not drop any stitches. But if a crochet hook helps you, then by all means, use one. Just a matter of preference.

Knit the first 2 stitches as normal, the lift the first stich you did over the second stitch towards the point of the needle and then slip it off the needle. Knit a third stitch and lift the second stitch over it as before and again slip it of the needle, then knit the 4th stitch and do the same and so on.
When you get to the last stitch cut the yarn from the ball to leave a tail of about 6 inches and pull the end of this yarn through the last stitch and pull to tighten. Then work the tail of yarn back throught the scarf to hide it along the seam with a yarn needle.
Good luck, hope you get it done in time!

Knit two stitches. Pull the first stitch over the seconded stitch. Knit one more stitch. Pull the first stitch on the needle over the second stitch. When you are binding off, you should never ever have more than 2 stitches on the needle. If you are a visual learner, try Knitting Pattern Central.

Pull the last thread through all of the loose loops one by one, as if you are crocheting. You will need a crochet hook to do this. Make sure you don't skip any by accident or your scarf will unravel. Enjoy!
Isn't it a satisfying experience to finish a project like this? (:
