My exboyfriend says he has a black diamond ring for me but I don't know what a black diamond is. I mean I know what a regular one is but I looked it up on the internet and it says it is coal or something like that.

Here is the real answer for you...

The Composition of Diamond ( what it is made of ) is Carbon. A Black Diamond is an actual diamond but in its formation in the Earth, when the crystal structure was pressurized, it did not crystalize clear, but kept the inherit carbon properties. ( in other words, it crystalized black ). It wasn't unitl several years ago, that these diamonds were marketed for jewelry. They are considered the least expensive diamond on the wholesale market and 1.00ct stones can sell for less than $100.00.

Hope this helps...

I learned this the hard way years ago. When I was ready to propose to my wife I purchased a diamond at the apparel mart. When I asked for the appraisal value and papers to go with the ring, it was explained that it would be mailed. I had a gut feeling to get a second opinion from a jeweler and was relieved that I did. Turns out the original 1.50 ct ring I purchased was a knot diamond AKA Black Diamond. I immediately stopped payment on the check and sent the ring back insured mail via US postal. I timed everything perfectly and had my money to purchase an appropriate cut, clarity and size that I had hoped for in the beginning. I had a ticked off dishonest jeweler that had the nerve to sell me this fair market value as if it were of higher quality and then followed up with a nasty phone call asking why I stopped payment. They can shine a black diamond up to look very good to the eye, but once your oil from skin comes into contact with the coal it becomes dull and insignificant. The gentleman below who is in this field of expertise explains it best. A 1 carat ring can be worth less than paid for originally. It pays to educate ones self on such a large sentimental purchase.
