It needs a tune-up. You've got the new fuel filter, now replace the plugs and wires. You'll be golden.

All of the above answers are incorrect. I am not being an @ss, but here's why: 1999 and up Chevy Trucks have electronic fuel injection, which by design disables throttle inputs during cranking EXCEPT when wide open throttle is used. This is called, 'clear flood mode.' During clear-flood mode, the computer will deactivate all fuel injectors during cranking (this requires you to have the gas pedal to the floor) and allow a much higher air to fuel ratio in, clearing the engine of excessive fuel which inhibits starting. If you give the vehicle partial, or full throttle during cranking and it starts easier, the reason is because you are adding the air it's in need of. The bottom line, your engine is starting up, and possibly also running rich (too much fuel). This is a common concern on older trucks of your year-model. The first thing you should do is check the air filter, and replace if it's dirty. Next, remove the intake pipe that runs from the air filter box to the throttle body. Clean the throttle bore, or have it cleaned. This is called a throttle body service. Restricted throttle bodies make starting hard. There is also a program update available for the computer on your vehicle to improve driveability and performance, from the dealership (not aftermarket). There are a number of other things which can cause this problem also. A few include poor fuel quality, excessive engine carbon buildup (caused by poor fuel), lacking maintenance, etc. How many miles are on the vehicle? How long has it been since you had the fuel injectors professionally flushed? Clogged injectors can cause poor injection patterns which "pour" fuel into the engine instead of spraying it as it should.. For about 80 dollars, your nearest Chevy dealer can tell you exactly what is needed to fix it. Good luck to you.

How long has it been doing this?? GM fuel pumps sometimes act like this just before they die.Sounds to me like your fuel pressure is weak due to the pump going bad. With fuel injection most vehicles once the key is turned on to the full "on" position the fuel pump is set up to bring full pressure through the lines and spirt a small amount of fuel out of the injectors to start the car.If pressure is low the fuel may not be up through the lines enough to give it the "shot" it needs so in turn dont start right away till you depress the pedal forcing the system.Get it checked soon, more than likely it is on borrowed time and next time may fail completely and leave you stranded.

If it starts ok in the morning after sitting all night, but has an extended crank before starting after sitting just a couple of hours then there is a good chance that you have a bad fuel pressure regulator.

Put a fuel pressure gauge in-line closest to your fuel rail by the engine, see if its getting proper pressure to the injectors,if so pulse test the injectors to see if one or more is bad..

I love do it yourselfers. You people give me lots of good work at the dealership. All I can say is keep up the good work. We appreciate your lack of knowing what your doing. My guess is you got 2 clowns who have no idea what they are doing, either get the same 2 clowns to undo what they did or tow it to the dealership or repair shop & have them fix it
