I hate to say it, but many antivirus/spyware/network security programs are causing the hang ups. They have grown from small programs scanning for viruses to monsterous bloated programs that kill your PC, and mess with everything. If you have norton 10, then it is almost definitely that. It has to be the worst software I have come across.

Ditto to BOTH of the above answers. Make sure all the temp files are gone. That can lag things down. Make sure you download (it is free) Spybot Search and Destroy and run it on a regular basis. I also use Ad-Aware (also free).

If you've done all of that and it is still having issues, I would look into what you have in your startup. Sometimes if you have a ton of things running in the background (even though you never started them on your own....you can see what is running by your clock in Windows) and that takes up memory...sometimes LOTS of it...and that can take its toll on your machine.

I ONLY leave in the start-up what is bare necessity to run at all times. That would be things like the basic system stuff that will automatically run, anyway, and things like your antivirus. Don't keep any music programs in there.....photo editing programs in there.....nothing like that. If you want to use that stuff, then open it manually. No reason for it run if you aren't using it.

Get things out of the startup:

START---RUN---MSCONFIG---STARTUP (TAB). Uncheck all the unneccesary things...and then reboot. If you are unsure what is what in there, you can always look online by searching for the name of it to see what it is.

And to add to what #3 said......the antivirus could lag you down..yes, even though it is a necessary evil to be in the start-up. HOWEVER...you do not need the anti-spyware programs in the start-up or running on a continuous basis so those shouldn't cause you any issues unless you are running them at the time (running the scans) and don't have enough memory to do it.

Not sure exactly what you mean? Does the Phone line disconnect? Or does the computer just stop working?
If the computer just stops working, there is ways to find out whats going on in windows. However my first thought is, download a copy of -Spybot- and run it. Its one of the best programs that I have seen that gets the job done.

Working with a slow computer can be time consuming as programs/ applications take a long time to start. This problem is more pronounced in computers which have been used for 6 or more months. More information at http://fixit.in/slowcomputer.html

Hmm... considering internet security tools take up some RAM, you could close other applications on your taskbar or Process list, such as Windows Messenger, or Quicktime.

One of the things that always helps me is deleting my files and cookies on the internet. You will find it under tools and then internet options. Also periodicly delete you history because that can cause back up too.

If your computer is not working properly while you are working on it, it could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software.
