Most gas today is fairly equal, while not completely.
As for the octane of the fuel, 87, 89, 92 , the octane represents the rated abilility of that fuel to withstand detonation,(violent combustion) or preignition ( fuel igniting before the spark plug fires, due to the heat from excessive compression). The average car today needs nothing more than 87. The reason for this is because the auto makers keep the compression ratio's of the engines they make low enough to run fine on the lower octane fuel. The more you compress air, the hotter it gets. In the past, a lot of the muscle cars of the sixtys had engines with 11 to 1, even a few 12 to 1 compression ratios. These engines had to have high octane fuel, or they would knock,or clatter (detonation or preignition) When the EPA required the elimination of lead in fuel, (Unleaded) this resulted in a lower octane fuel, because lead was a cheap anti knock additive that increased the octane of the fuel. It also served as lubrication for valves and valve seats. The automakers were forced to harden valve seats when lead was removed from fuel. I remember 100 octane at the pump. That was leaded fuel.
As for as the detergents in the fuel, quit worrying about it. If you own a fuel injected vehicle, You should use a injector cleaner occassionally. Also, another recommendation. I recommend using a lubrication in your fuel, ( Marvel mystery oil, Lucas, etc) This serves as a lubrication for the injectors, and injection pump. Also the upper cylinder walls. This is usually at a ratio of 3 to 4 ounces per 10 gallons of fuel. It IS worth it, believe me. Lucas is injector cleaner, so if you use it in every tank, at the ratio it recommends, it makes little difference what the fuel brand you buy, unless you are buying drip, from shady Jack. Your engine will last longer on it.

Match up the octane rating with what your car requires and buy on price. All brands are virtually the same. Gasoline standards are set by federal law. The only differences are dubious additives added after the tank truck is filled at the depot.

Most of the fuel comes from the same fuel depot, regardless of the brand on the pump. If you don't believe that, follow a few fuel tankers "home" and you might be surprised.

Not all gasolines are good. Chevron / Texaco / Shell / BP or any national brand you've HEARD of are all safe bets. If you've never heard of the place before, they might not have the best gas - stations at 7-11's and random convenience stores aren't the best bet. As far as octane goes, read your owner's manual and don't waste your money on anything over what it recommends.

No, that's not true. You do have to be careful of the little no name stations though. Sometimes they do get poor quality gasolines that can gunk up your car.

No,all gasoline has to meet state standards before it can be sold to public, all gasolines are good, its just preferred choice where someone goes for it.
