Colleen was a little off by saying that 40 weeks would be 10 months. It would if every month was February - in fact with all the months with 30 or 31 days, 40 weeks is equal to about 9 "calendar months". It was an estimate accepted for years without being measured but is a good approximation.
Why - well, nerve cells grow more slowly than any other type of cell, and 9 months seems to be the time required due to the size and complexity of the human brain.

It doesn't always take 9 months. It takes from 32 to 40 weeks. If one gestates to 32 weeks that would equal 8 months, if one gestates to 40 weeks that would be 10 monhts. Women give birth at different times during the 32/40 weeks which is why it is PRESUMED that the average would be 9 months.
