And why should I read them?

Ishmael, mentioned above, is indeed one of the most thought-provoking books I've read. That is a good suggestion. Also, a lot of girls I know are fans of Chuck Palahniuk, though I personally can't get past the gross parts.

Alice in Wonderland is a book well-suited for a girl like you!

Finally, don't read any of that Christian crap. Christians are horribly uncreative people. Read the Tao Te Ching if you're feeling the need for some religious wisdom.

I can definitely help you in some fiction/fantasy (mostly young adult, but not all), if you're interested in that.
Eragon, by Christopher Paolini (movie comes out Friday!)
Twilight and New Moon, by Stephenie Meyer (two different books)
His Dark Materials trilogy, by Philip Pullman
Joust, by Mercedes Lackey
Inkheart, by Cornelia Funke
The Abhorsen trilogy, by Garth Nix
The Bartimaeus trilogy (forget the author... Jonathan Stroud, I think, or something similar)

That's all I can think of off the top of my head. Let me know if it helps.

Ishmael by Daniel Quinn

It will question all that you have been taught by american culture and will provide you with life-changing information. It was one of the more thought-provoking books I've read.

I'd recommend Choke by Chuck Palahniuk. He's the author of Fight Club. Be warned, there's a fair bit of sex in it - it's not for everyone. Mind you, my mother is over 60, she read it and really liked it also....
