I would start her off with Verizon's prepaid service. This way, she won't have a chance to abuse that phone in the way that so many people are warning you about. With Verizon's prepaid service, you buy the minutes as you need them. Also, the Verizon mobile to mobile (INnetwork calling) is included in the prepaid plan.

Another option is to try Disney Mobile. They have really cute phones that a kid of 12 would like. The best thing about these phones are that the company focuses mainly on controlling when the kid uses the phone. You can set specific times, dates, and numbers that the kid can call. You can also "give" them a bundle of their minutes and say "this is what you get for the week." Of course, you will have the option to let her call you anytime via parental controls. the phones even have GPS integrated on them so that you can see if your kid is where she says she is going to be. You can put in specific parameters via parental controls and you can get alerted via phone or email if she leaves the parental boundries. go to http://www.disneymobile.com to find out more. They have comparable service, phones, and price plans as Verizon or any other major wireless carrier.

PS, I work for Cingular, and I'm giving you my honest opinion of what I think would work best for a twelve year old because of my experience in the field (more than six years).

Good luck! She will LOVE whatever phone you get her!

yeah, don't get her a phone. i'm not trying to be mean, just honest. why does she need a phone? she's only 12. she might be a great kid, but chances are that she will get her child-like hands on it, and run that bill up! if you must get her one, get a pre-paid one that you recharge every time. that way, you control the amt she spends, and you can set a limit. she also needs ground rules for the phone, like- she can't use it in school (or even take it to school), and she has to keep it on at all times, and answer it WHENEVER you call her. you and your husband need to come up with some type of aggreement regarding the phone, and be able to monitor her calls, so that she isn't getting into trouble with boys. Verizon has the prepaid phones.

This drives me nuts.

First off don't buy a cell phone until she can get away by herself.
reason being , if shes 12 , she had better be with someone grown that has accessibility to a phone in case of emergency. She shouldn't be out by herself at the age of 12.

It's a sad these days when you feel you can let your kids leave further from home because you give them a cell phone so they can call if they need something.

This just gives kids an excuse to get away with more, abuse the use of the cell phone etc. Kids at 12 are not responsible enough to use the cell phone in the air time , text messaging times allowed.

If she wants a cell phone and you are going to buy her one you are setting yourself up big time.

If it is a family plan that will be the best. Try to get her a phone that won't be easy to lose. Don't feel the need to pay too much. Otherwise, listen to what she wants out of the phone.

You should get her one of those kid's phones that controls how many minutes and text messages she gets. If you do want to get her a regular phone, I have the v323 with U.S Cellular. It is a very durable phone. Don't get her something that will break right away if she drops it. Good luck with your decision.

My son is 11 and we got him his first cell phone last christmas. We added him to our plan and we bought him the cheapest phone we could find, that way if he broke it or anything we wouldn't be out that much money.

Get her the LG Migo.

If you want a regular phone for her then get the LGVX3450.Its a simple phone.

PS)She's lucky.I'm a sophomore in high school and my parents still won't get me a phone.

Well, you could get her virgin mobile (although I can't honestly recommend them), because then you don't have to have the plan and she can just buy phone cards, or a prepaid like tracphone.

Probably a candy bar simple phone, you could go to your local version store and ask what they suggest.
