In my opinion, it's the biggest lie parents tell because they cover it up and do it year after year. It is sad. I think most parents do it because they don't have enough confident in their children to understand Christmas at an early age and some parents do it because they don't have enough confidence in themselves to explain it and yet, some parents probably do it because they don't understand it or have never been taught about it.
It's even more sad to think that parents get more enjoyment out of telling the lie than the kids do opening up the presents.

Because it is FUN! It instills wonder into a child. The real world will come for them soon enough. WHY can't you anti-Santa fanatics just leave everyone else alone? If you do not want to believe, then DON'T!! You do not have to try to take children's' fond memories away from them.
There is more to life than cold, hard truth. You cannot insinuate that you are truthful to everyone, all the time. There are so many ways to lie and deceive. Have you not told someone something? That is a lie of om mission. Have you let someone else follow their own assumptions instead of telling them something? That is a lie. Have you done something illegal and not told the police? That is a lie.
I'm truly sorry that you are in such a miserable state. You have my pity.

Because especially in today's world so filled with violence and hate, it is nice for kids to still have a little fun and "magic" around the holidays. However, I believe that when a child asks if there is a Santa you should be truthful. My daughter is 7 and was delighted when she found out Mom and Dad were Santa! Before that she enjoyed the fun of making "reindeer food" and leaving out milk and cookies. It is sad, I wonder why you seem so bitter.
EDIT: Mr Ed, I can assure you that I didn't snicker at my children but delighted in their joy and excitement on Christmas Eve.

Children today learn the harsh realities of life much earlier than generations past....and it seems mean spirited to take the small joys out of their lives in the name of "truth". I do not feel bad at all for having perpetuated the myth with my children. They grew up to be loving, caring individuals who are now giving their children the gift of "the wonder of Christmas" and Santa Claus.

Truth does not seem to be a very high value in a lot of people's minds. The fun of snickering at their kids is more important to them.

The world is filled with cold, hard truth. Is it really so terrible to role play a little story about love and happiness once a year?
