If you are starting out, I suggest that you take a look at Mandriva, Ubuntu or Kubuntu.

Mandriva - While I think it is the prettiest of them all, I think the speed takes a hit. It uses .rpm based installers (if you don't know what that is yet, it is fine. You will learn.)

Kubuntu - I personally feel that this is a great start for a beginner. KDE in general is much closer to Windows than GNOME. It is .deb based.

Ubuntu - Ubuntu is the same as Kubuntu, but it has the GNOME interface. I believe that it is the fastest of all of the ones that I have listed.

The best way to find the Linux distribution for you is to try out many of them. All of the ones that I have listed have Live CDs, that will allow you to try out the distribution before you install it.

The answer to your question depends largely upon what you will be using Linux for and how much experience you have (or how much time you are willing to put into learning a new OS). Also, are you wanting to install Linux on a desktop or laptop?

If you are completely new to Linux and want a basic platform upon which to learn, then Ubuntu is probably your distro of choice.

Try Ubuntu or Kubuntu.
It so easy to download and burn into just one CD.
It has Live CD version to try before install to your machine(Live CD run so slow but will OK when you install into hard disk )

But I like interface graphic of suse Linux. So cool, beautifully but not easy to use and you need to download for 5 Cd's or load large 1 file for DVD.
