Assuming you could actually put it into reverse in this situation... worst case, you'd probably wind up financing a pretty nice vacation for your mechanic! In short, you'd break something pretty bad - just what you break would depend on the car and where the weak point is. You could wind up blowing up the transmission, the diff, or even wind up running the engine backwards. Best case, you'd wear alot of tire off as you grind to a halt

Cant do it. The main shaft in the Transmision is turning forward 80 miles an hour and the gears won't sync up to engage.
Give it a try.

depends on how old the car is...car makers put a reverse lock out switch on newer cars with a manual. try putting your car in reverse while you are going 10 miles an hour, then slowly reduce your speed. right when you are about stopped it will let you in reverse. i accidentally put my work truck (automatic 2001 gmc) into reverse and it just turned off.

The drive wheels will lock. It won't tear anything up, unless you slide and wreck of course.

nothing it would just clean up the transmission and the clutch when you let it back out.
