As jamiaca answered, there is an estimated 30 mllion species of INSECTS on the planet, this estimate was made by an entomologist in Panama.
The actual number of described species is somewhere around the 1.5million mark. Insects alone make up about 1million knonw species, then there are the crustaceans, arachnids and lots of smaller classes, like diplopoda (millipedes) chilopoda (centipedes) and others.

so around 1.5 million is what is known right now, with more coming all the time. The arthropods are the most diverse of all the groups of animals on the planet by far!
