It has been done. Moin Khan did it first. (Not an international match)
In England, the foloowing have hit Twenty20 centuries:
Cameron White (Twice)
Ian Thomas
Graeme Hick
Andrew Symonds
Darren Maddy
Ian Harvey
Ian Harvey
Ben Smith
Graeme Smith
Stuart Law
Ian Harvey
Mal Loye
Ronnie Irani
White hit 140 off 71 balls.
Ponting did score 98 in an international. Sooner or later that would be broken.

Craig Mcmillian was one, and a couple of others score 100's in Cricket Max domestic cricket in New Zealand. That is a century in 10 overs. I watched a few of these centuries. 10 overs per side (played like a test match, 10 overs then switch, then switch again)
Ponting made 98* in the first 20/20 international
Many people have made ton's in domestic 20/20. Irani, C White, Andrew Symonds.
No one has done it yet in an international, and no, its not too hard.

It will be very, very difficult for anybody to score a century in a 20/20 match.

Well it is possible, however it would be a great effort to do so, as they take so many more risks in 20/20. Therefore the likelihood of it occuring would be less. But they are such amazing sportspeople and nothing surprises me.
