Sen. Tim Johnson, D-South Dakota, was hospitalized Wednesday after he suffered stroke-like symptoms in his Washington office. If he can't serve out his term, the Republican governor will appoint a new Senator (likely a Republican)

Probably not. he'll stay somehow. A lot of people survive strokes, he wouldn't be the first.

I doubt the balance of power will change. Many Senators still hold their office while suffering from medical problems. News updates show that he is slowly getting better and as a South Dakotan, I think consituents are mostly worried about his recovery.

No. The only way a new Senator can be appointed is if Johnson dies or resigns.
