I don't think it's a marketing gimmick; its just a term sociologists have developed to better describe that age bracket--"between" little girls and boys and teenagers, although I see it most commonly used for girls.

Personally, I hate the term and I prefer pre-teen. I think the word "tween" itself sounds so juvenile and obnoxious. I would have hated to have been referred as a tween if I were 12.

"Need" it? To we need the word "teen" to describe teen-aged children? No, but we use it.
"Tween" has been around since at least the 1980s (I know because I was called a "Tween" then) It's not a marketing GIMMICK, it's a marketing TERM that's used to describe a target audience. Just like DINKs, YUPPIES, Soccer Moms, Nascar Dads, etc.

Not so much a marketing gimmick, as marketing lingo. If your target market for a product is aimed at 8-12 years olds it is the word de jour to describe that group. Seeing as they are a hot market for numerous crappy consumables, it is easier to use that abbreviation

ween may refer to:

* Preteen, a child between middle childhood and adolescence, generally in the age range of 8 to 12 years old
* Tween, in J. R. R. Tolkien's The Fellowship of the Ring, a hobbit between the ages of 20 and 32, a period of adolescence for hobbits, who have longer lifespans than humans and aren't considered adults until age 33
* Tweening, in animation, intermediate frames often added by an assistant animator or by computer
* Tween (webcomic), a web comic by Anthony Furtado
* "Tween" was used by Mark Clifton in Star, Bright (1952) as a reference to the merely ordinary geniuses [1]
* Polysorbate detergents such as Tween 20 and Tween 80, Tween is a detergent, e.g. used in buffer TBS when doing Western blotting
* Tween Brands, Inc., a company specializing in female clothing for ages 7-14

I don't care for it. Kids are growing up too fast and without a childhood.

The term is being used because children 8-12 years of age are doing teenage things. ( teen and tween) They are watching mature television, playing R rated video games, using cell phones, having sex , etc..

I thought it was a Disney gimmick, to be more specific. I first heard the term when that stupid Hilary Duff show was on. Then I started hearing the term everywhere.

"Tween" is for girls who are too old for dolls but too young for boys. They are IN BETWEEN being a little girl and a teenager.
