my 8th grade math teacher gave our class this project... there are lots of things you aren't allowed to do, so please read the following:

ILLEGAL MATERIALS: "Treated" eggs (boiled, soaked in vinegar), rotten eggs. duck tape, reinforced tape, or shiping tape. No peanut butter, jell-o, NO LIQUIDS, powdered soap, flamable liquids, or glass. NO AERODYNAMIC OR RESTRAINING DEVICES OF ANY KIND (that means no parachutes).

COMMERCIALLY CONSTRUCTED CONTAINER ARE ILLEGAL.

CONTAINER MUST HAVE DIMENSION THAT ALL OF WHICH ARE LESS THAN 35 CM.

THE MORE EGGS [THAT LAND UNHARMED], THE BETTER!!!

If you know of any good websites that contain any iformation that could help, PLMK. Thanks.

Why dont you try making a frame out of wood, and using elastics to hold the agg in the center? When it drops, it has some room to bounce without hitting anything.

Mythbusters did this a few months ago. I think the most sturdy was the container in styrofoam they used duct tape to seal it so you will have to figure out another adhesive to make it seal.

Cut the styrofoam in half and scoop out a nest for the egg.. then seal it with maybe super glue something strong like that. maybe epoxy that should keep it from spiliting open.

Just an idea.. I am sure you can take it from there.

Heres the actual physics behind it. Theres a concept of "impulse" which mathimatically equals Force of the impact times the time it takes for the impact to happen. This also equals the Change in momentum of the hit. Not, solve for F you et Change in momentum divided by time. Now change in momentum cannot be changed, so if you increase the time it takes to land, it will lessen the force.

Ever wonder why landing on a bed hurts less than a floor?

When I did this project in high school, I gently wrapped the egg in a rag, then put it in a cardboard box filled with more rags. The project took about 3 minutes. They couldn't break the egg even by flinging it at the ground.

have you seen the cartoons Madeline, where she drop an egg at the top of the Eiffel tower? she put a pillow on the foot of Eiffel tower and she dropped the egg in the pillow so it does not break.

put the egg in the bag, the rate of its dropping would be slower and put straws around it and filled the inside were the egg was with cotton

or put the egg in a box and have towel and cotton balls around it so that it could protect the egg from braking.

I think pipecleaners are pretty easy to work with. You could wrap the egg in a few layers - be sure the outer layers aren't tight, even spaced away from the egg to absorb most of the inpact.

Try surrounding the egg with crumpled newspaper held in place by tape.
