so my husband and I are looking into getting i'net service at home. problem- we dont currently have phone service so i dont think dsl or dial up would work unless with get that. second problem- its impossible to find just basic phone service that's cheaper than say, high speed internet. all we need is to get online, speed isn't really factor. is there either cheaper high speed or a cheap basic phone service provider? it's getting too complicated in my opinion

You can get basic service on your telephone for under $10.00 a month, sign up for the lifeline also. I pay $14.99 a month for my high speed DSL, people say it's not as fast as Cable, I download a song in 70 seconds or less. Anyway, in order to get that dirt cheap DSL Internet price, I had to agree to sign up for a whole year of DSL, which is OK, I have had Internet since 1999 non-stop, uninterrupted- don't plan on living without it ever. Dial up is awful, it's a pain in the ***, all it does is waste your time and raise your blood pressure and you won't get away with paying very much if any less per month.than 2 dollars for dial up. So go high speed~get a phone!

I know you said that you just want to get online and that the speed factor is not important to you...that's fine........however, I would advice against investing any kind of money into an internet setup that limits you to dial up only. Dial-up would make it difficult (and often very frustrating) to navigate the simpler of webpages out there today. Even the pages from yahoo or google (your most popular search engines and email providers) are heavily loaded with graphics and extensive information that just makes dial-up choke up and slow down even more than it usually would. It's like trying to push a watermelon through a water hose.
Anyhow, my suggestion is to look into your local phone provider (s) and find out what kind of bundle packages they can offer. It is often the case that if you hook up your phone service or tv cable along with a high speed internet connection, they will give you a pretty good deal on the price.
Push comes to shove you could try AOL dial up...the setup is fairly simple and they have an option to upgrade to a "high speed dial-up" of sorts.
Bottomline...I would do at least a DSL line...it works through an existing phone line with a filter and it's fairly inexpensive and fast.
Good Luck

ClearWire is a wireless internet service. It works good for laptops. You can move around anywhere in the house. You might check their prices online.

Also, I have ATT formerly SBC phone service. I get internet and
my phone service all together and even have call waiting. I pay
$69.00 a month.

Also, I know the public library here has FREE internet service. Just walk in and start using it. If you have a MSN Hotmail
account, you can check your e-mail from the library computer
or any computer. Check with your local library. (The only
problem is the keyboard is generally greasy dirty. Bleccch.
Might want to bring a small towel and disinfectant to clean it
before you use it.)

Phone internet service is the cheapest. With standard phone service, (I pay about 20 USD for basic phone) most internet service for dial-up is about 10 . DSL is about 15 and is worth it. Cable is faster and most expensive in my area at about 42 per month , providing you are a current cable subscriber and you pay 46 more for basic cable. You might get a good package deal from the phone company if you get phone and DSL at the same time. It just depends on your area.

check with your local cable company to see if they offer high speed internet. I do not have a LAN line, haven't had one for the past 5 years.

(btw, CABLE is better than DSL)

some isps offer dsl without requiring phone service. it's called naked dsl and you would still need a phone line for the dsl, but you wouldn't get the ph one service. check if your att/yahoo offers it in your area or Verizon.

...some service providers will give dsl without a phoneline .. its just a data line, and usually the phoneline only adds 10-20$ to it anyway ... you just about have to go to a high-speed internet search engine and type in ur info to see wats available in ur area ...but it is harder without an existing phoneline ... use ur neibors phone# for reference if u have to ...

If you don't mind slow, you can go to att.com and get it for 5 bucks a month. To get free internet, go to the library. It's a pain but it's free. Just make sure you get a local dial up number or you will be PAYING THROUGH THE NOSE FOR LONG DISTANCE.
