He was apparently smart enough to get through an Ivy League school, however, he probably wouldn't have attended such a school had it not been for his father. I don't know much about his early business endeavors and whether his father's influence put him in a position to succeed in spite of himself. I doubt that he would have been president, if his father had not preceded him. He has a checkered past for sure with his heavy alchohol and drug use. Being born with a silver spoon in your mouth doesn't hurt, and certainly helps, if it means that you don't have to prove yourself to open the right doors. If he managed his business the way he has managed his Administration, he must have had some help along the way. I can't imagine a successful businessman who refuses to change even in the face of total chaos and failure and some of the best minds in the business telling him that he has taken the wrong road. Its kind of like Nero fiddling while Rome burned.

You don't get to be, or stay a rich person by being stupid!
But I know a sure fire way that you could quickly become the CEO of a multi million dollar corporation.
All you need is to have someone give you a multi billion corporation and I'm sure with your brains it would be worth millions in no time!
Thermometer says you've been burned.

If he weren't a rich man's son, he'd still be ok because he could collect social security for his mental disability. And probably McDonald's would hire him to mop and wipe down tables too.
